The Puja for Food Security is significant in both the Northern and Southern parts of India. The deity of food and nourishment is the Hindu Goddess Annapurna, also known as Annapoorna and Annapurneshwari. She is a manifestation of Goddess Parvati, the wife of Shiva.
Worship of Goddess Annapurna leads devotees to always having their fill of food and wealth. Akshay Tritiya is considered to be her birth date, and hence the day is very auspicious for buying gold jewelry. According to legend, once Shiva and Parvati got into an argument about the material world.
Shiva said that everything materialistic in the world, including the food humans ate, is nothing but an illusion. Parvati, who governs the materialistic aspects of the world, became infuriated and said that she wants to see how the world will survive without her. Saying so, she disappeared.

Shiva went there himself to beg for alms and got to know that the kitchen was run by his wife’s form Annapurna. She was distributing the food to humans and gods alike as she sat on her throne. As she gave alms to Shiva, she made him realize that he might have outgrown his hunger as a Brahmin, but his followers hadn’t.
